Peter Rooney: Starting a Business in Canada

The Atom Team

In this podcast, we are joined by Peter Rooney, Chief Revenue Officer at Canadian Payroll Services who has had experience at different companies in a variety of senior roles such as CEO, Co-founder, and President,  to discuss how to start up or expand a business in Canada, and why you should consider doing so.

We talk about the extensive business market and opportunities in Canada and what sectors are currently doing well, the positive attitude towards entrepreneurs and immigrants looking to do business across their borders and how multiculturism in the country opens marketing and business opportunities aimed towards different communities, and how there is a big employee driven culture in Canada where customers take into consideration how businesses treat their employees.

During the pandemic, many companies and employees have become accustomed to working from home or remotely and although attitudes towards moving back to office life depend on individual experiences and productivity, many companies will likely be more flexible about allowing employees to work from home and that any return to traditional office life will not be the same as it was pre-pandemic.

Main Topics

  • Start-ups in Canada
  • Canadian Market Opportunities

Guest

  • Peter Rooney – Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at Canadian Payroll Services and experienced business CEO, co-founder, president, and vice president

Main Questions

  • Why would someone want to start-up in Canada over the USA?
  • Is there any particular state that is better to set up in than others?
  • Are there certain sectors that are especially booming or lacking?
  • Is there a lot of government support for businesses?

An Interesting Point

  •  Just as in the USA it can be difficult to transport certain goods between states if there are different laws pertaining to that good, do your research into restrictions on buying and selling certain goods in each Canadian province. Goods such as alcohol and tobacco impact tax revenues and therefore restrictions in different provinces and although there is no policing at province borders, there are fines for being caught with transported goods.
